Welcome!

I am the author of  Open Hands,   an in-depth look at the pursuit of mercy. This is my first book. Hopefully, there is more to come! On this page, I will share some excerpts from the book ... which will usually drop on a Wednesday. If you're interested in more content, check out Open Hands on Amazon .

Audible Sale

I can't control the Audible pricing ... they control that. For an audiobook of this length, it's typically priced at $19.95. But! Every so often they put a random collection of audiobooks on sale ... and Open Hands is currently on sale at $15.96. It's not a huge savings, but it's something. I'm also not sure how long this reduced price will last. https://www.audible.com/pd/Open-Hands-Audiobook/B0C78XTKFP You're welcome to listen to the individual chapters using the podcast  (which is free): https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/a-bright-corner

Launching a podcast (sorta)

I'm trying something new ... I've uploaded the individual audiobook chapters to Spotify as episodes of a podcast. I've done this because I have very little control over how Audible markets and prices products. At $19.95 very few copies have been purchased. This is a little disappointing, in part, because the process of creating an audiobook is arduous. It also requires very specific expertise. My professional collaborator, Tim Bodnar, did a wonderful job. (To be clear, I wrote this book; I did not narrate the audiobook.) By placing the chapters on Spotify, you can listen to them as a podcast. It's free. I hope this is helpful. I will say that the paperback is the definitive edition of the book. It is carefully formatted, and some of the material is far more useful on the printed page. Even the Kindle edition lacks some of this formatting. If the "podcast" version of Open Hands is well-received, I might consider creating additional content. We shall see where t

Introduction / Glossary

Image
We’ll start by establishing a shared vocabulary. I will take you on a tour of the key words used in the original languages, and then I will provide working English definitions which we will use going forward. This glossary gets us started. When appropriate, we will dig deeper into these terms as we progress through the book. The Hebrew and Greek terms for this principle are variously rendered into English as mercy, grace, love, kindness, lovingkindness, goodness, compassion, favor, pity, sympathy, loyalty, righteousness, justice and a handful of others. The non-English terms in the following chart represent a family of words. For example, chêsêd is a noun, châsad is a verb, châsı̂yd is an adjective, etc. For simplicity’s sake, I will use one term from each family to represent the whole family of words. When greater precision is warranted, I will embed a reference number in the Scripture quotation, like so: Have mercy[5] on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love;[1] according t

Be Engaged :: Working Together :: With Initative

What do you do if you see a huge need, but you don’t see any efforts to adequately meet that need? Perhaps there’s a growing homeless problem in your city. Perhaps there’s a food desert in your neighborhood. Perhaps there’s a recent natural disaster that has impacted a lot of people in your community. There are many, many, many more examples of commonly under-met large scale needs. You see it. You know something needs to be done. So … do something. I will only suggest a first step, but it’s a good one. Get people together. Bring them into a room. Share your heart with them. Ask them to help. Let’s walk through this by using a food desert as an example. You’re going to need to recruit people. Who? Those who are impacted and those who can help. You need a good grasp of the problem, so talk to people who understand it from multiple angles. Talk to those who live in the neighborhood. Ask them how they’re currently managing and what they would find helpful. You also need p
